Uber Eats wins Graphite Pencil at D&AD

Super proud to have been awarded a D&AD Graphite Pencil for the Uber Eats AO Campaign.

Special Group is proud to win Uber’s first D&AD pencil ever with the Australian Open Ambush campaign. An amazing collaboration with Uber, the Glue Society, Revolver, MediaCom, Tennis Australia and Channel Nine resulted in a brand integration like never before. 13 million people watched the Australian Open Tennis coverage constantly caught off guard by films that appeared to be the tennis only to have the players, umpires, even camera people turn to camera and make an Uber Eats food order. Game. Set. Match. Uber Eats.

Jules selected to judge prestigious Film Category at Cannes.

Our ECD Julian Schreiber was thrilled to be chosen to judge Film at Cannes this year. And it has definitely always been on his personal advertising bucket list. Most people believe this is a week of judging in the South of France (lovely) but in fact it’s a month of immersing yourself in the best work the world has to offer beforehand with pre-judging. He is very quickly becoming a 2019 encyclopedia of world advertising.

Only Australian creative to be selected to attend Cannes ‘See It Be It’ Programme.

Special’s Josie Fox is one of only 15 women to have been chosen (from over 760 applicants around the world) for the Cannes Lions ‘See It Be It’ Programme, which identifies the next generation of female creative leaders, supports and accelerates their career – while also working towards equal representation of gender in Creative Director roles. While over there, she’ll receive a complete festival pass, travel and accommodation courtesy of the festival, along with an exclusive programme of events, workshops and mentoring with some of the industry’s most respected leaders. Awards shows are more interesting when you get TIPSY

Our first ‘make-starter’ innovation unveiled at the B&T awards last night.

With the help of Nakatomi, we backed the idea of Creatives Jack and Nils to find a way to make advertising award shows even more exciting. Tipsy is a free event-based tipping app that lets you pick winners in each award category. Users enter their selections at the start of the night, then follow the results throughout via a live leaderboard. Making every category fun for everyone at the event and everyone not so fortunate to be there in person. It had its first run at the B&T awards, with Chris Howatson, CEO of CHE Proximity, taking home $1,000 cash after correctly guessing the winners from 17 of 35 categories.

Latest exhibition at Special Group Studios. Treasures - An Ode to the Objects We Keep Close.

Beautiful and bold work from artist Kiata Mason.

Special Group Studios is hosting celebrated Australian artist Kiata Mason’s latest exhibition: Treasures - An Ode to the Objects We Keep Close. Curated by Amber Creswell Bell, this body of work will explore understandings of family and home and will focus on large-scale interior landscapes and atmospheric vignettes. Admittedly, we feel rather blessed to start the day by walking into such a colourful gallery.

We built (and then later crashed) a plane!

Our Flamin’ Gal Air took flight (well nose-bombed actually) into Sydney Harbour.

In our eyes there was nothing braver in 2018 than when our creative resources manager Emily built her very own full blown 5 metre wingspan glider to enter Red Bull’s annual Flugtag flying competition off the cliff at Lady Macquarie’s Chair. The agency backed her completely, giving her time, money, materials and even a pilot – poor Harry, one of our writers. After months of construction, preparation and training, the Flamin’ Gal Air crew finally took to the skies. Inspired by Home & Away’s Alf Stewart, the craft soared gracefully for about 0.8 seconds before nose-diving into the salty depths of Sydney Harbour. Thousands were in attendance to watch the sensational descent.

A Mystery Combo launched through Uber Eats for Maccas.

To drive awareness that Uber Eats delivers Macca’s direct to your door, we launched a brand new menu item, exclusive to Uber Eats - the Apple Pie McFlurry. A genius combination of Hot Apple Pie & Caramel Sundae, together at last.

Macca’s fans love to create their own ‘secret menu’ combos, and 1 in 4 McDonald’s Apple Pies ordered on Uber Eats is accompanied by a Sundae. So our social campaign teased the imminent arrival of a new mystery combo, driving some of our strongest social engagement to date. After the big reveal fans had a week to order one before anyone else through the app.

The product launch generated 223 pieces of media coverage, including national TV & US media. 23,786 Apple Pie McFlurrys were purchased in 6 days; that’s double the total McFlurry sales in the previous week, making it the #1 Macca’s product sold. McDonald’s sales saw a 20% uplift on launch day and we increased Macca’s awareness on Uber Eats by 5%. We added over 2000 new eaters on the app and over 7000 new to McDonald’s.

Special Group to evolve one of the world’s most iconic destination brands.

Special Group Australia and New Zealand teamed up to win this prestigious project.

A country-as-brand is one of the most interesting challenges our industry could ask for. But to work on evolving the 100% Pure New Zealand brand platform, which is where Special Group was originally founded, is extra Special (we also had a lot of fun collaborating across the Tasman with a highlight being developing ideas in Queenstown).

Donating clothes in style

To raise awareness of the annual Uber & Red Cross Clothing drive and dispel misconceptions around the quality of clothes that can be donated, we threw the first ever Farewell Fashion Show. 

Hosted by Jackie O and James Tobin, it featured 12 television and fashion personalities pledging their support by strutting down the catwalk in the very outfits they were donating.

Uber Eats - Cinco de Mayo

When it comes to a celebration, Uber Eats is always there to supply the food. But this year, for Cinco de Mayo, we also supplied the entertainment. 

Over a three-hour period on Facebook Live, a traditional mariachi band strummed their guitars, blew their trumpets and sang for the masses. The concept was simple, every time the music stopped another Uber Eats discount code dropped – it was our spin on musical chairs.

Red Bull - Uphill Marathon


To mark the launch of Red Bull Australia’s new Strava running club, Aussie runners are being challenged to compete in a new kind of race.

‘The Uphill Marathon’ is the first marathon where the steepest run wins, not the fastest. Runners are invited to join Red Bull’s Strava club and clock up 42.2km before April 6, where every metre of their elevation gain is logged to the Red Bull running website. The runner who completes the distance with the highest total elevation gain will be crowned king or queen of the hill.

Meet our new ECD’s and Partners, Tom Martin & Julian Schreiber.

After an almighty global search, we are over the moon to announce and welcome Tom and Jules to our creative helm. As creatives, CD’s and then ECD’s over the last two decades, Tom & Jules are one of Australia’s most respected creative leaders and have been responsible for many of Australia’s most awarded campaigns for both creativity and effectiveness, including the Four’N Twenty’s Magic Salad Plate, Guide Dog Australia’s Support Scent, Tourism Victoria’s Remote Control Tourist and Pedigree’s K9FM.

They also famously turned the banking world on its head as co-creators of the NAB ‘Break Up’ Campaign, which took out a Cannes Lions Grand Prix and three Grand Prix Spikes (including the first-ever awarded Grand Prix for effectiveness). Tom & Jules have been recognised for their work on brands big and small, winning Lions for Adidas’ Superstar campaign and more recently, for Go Gentle Australia’s Stop the Horror. We feel super lucky and are super excited.
